Guided Walking Tour of Archanes

The tour will offer to participants the opportunity to discover the town of Archanes which is characterised by Byzantine churches and many restored sandstone houses dating from the Turkish period era. Participates will also have the chance to experience the customs, architecture, and art that gave Archanes its distinctive character.

Welcome Reception

An Open Air Stone Theater is a sight not to be missed. We are planning a Welcome Reception at Fourni Open Air Theater which will include welcome addresses. A Folk dance group performance will create a unique atmosphere, followed by a special night that will include local dishes, wine in abundance and enjoyment. During buffet time an opportunity will be provided for delegates to catch up with friends, network and meet other participants.

THURSDAY 24th MAY 2012

Visit and sweet treat at “Fabrica Heleni” a traditional olive oil press

In Ano Archanes area, I6 klm far from Heraklion, the restored “Fabrica Heleni” will offer as a charming tour within time, through the initiation in traditional olive oil production. The olive oil factory, made by stone was built on a Minoan wall during 1870. It follows the local architectural specifications and constitutes an indispensable part of the Archanes area which is full of ancient findings.

Lunch at Xotaris Gallery

We cordially invite you to join us for a lunch with us at a wonderful two floor gallery. Xotaris gallery was created at an old wine-press, where some elements were kept to remind the process of making wine out of grapes. Enjoy your lunch and have a look at the exhibition.

Dinner at Archanes Square

At the tavernas located in the village’s tree-shaded square, you will sample an assortment of Cretan foods and locally produced wine, while listening to to Greek music.

Visit to Saint George “Epanosifis” Monastery (http://www.epanosifis.gr/). Participating delegates will have the opportunity to attend a 10 min Divine Liturgy and then a traditional treat by the monks of the monastery

FRIDAY 25th MAY 2012

Visit of Archanes Flea Market and Light Lunch

Local people will sell traditional products such as olive oil, honey, handmade soap, sweets and liquers. At the same time local ladies will demonstrate their traditional cooking skills and offer lunch. Both of these events will be offered exclusively for ICOT participants.

Walking tour of Heraklio City and Dinner

During this walking tour you will see the highlights of Heraklion, including the Morosini Fountain in Lion Square, the Venetian Loggia (town hall) and Agios Titos (a beautiful church), the castle, the Cathedral of St. Minas etc.

SATURDAY 26th MAY 2012

9.00 Departure – from the conference hotels.

9:30 Visit to a traditional winery
11:00 Release to the wild a Cretan bearded vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) (http://www.ekpazp.gr/multi158/index.php?lang=en). This species is unfortunately condemned to extinction, while the only breeding population survives on the island of Crete where the number of pairs has fallen to four and the number of individuals to around 27.
13:00 Free time for lunch
14:00 Musical Workshop Labyrinth at Houdetsi – welcome by Ross Daly (world famous musician who specializes in music of the Cretan lyra). Although of Irish descent, he has been living on the island of Crete for over 35 years.)
15.30 Visit and guiding to the Museum Nikos Kazantzakis (Mirtia) (separation to 25 member –groups for the guiding at the museum)
17.00 Return of participants at their hotels
SUNDAY 27th MAY 2012

Daytrip to Knossos, Spinalonga and Agios Nikolaos (Optional and financed by the participants)

9.00 Departure from the conference hotels.
Visit of Knossos (Archaeological Site outside Heraklion).
Free time for lunch
Visit of Spinalonga Island and its Venetian castle.
Visit of the beautiful city and lake of Agios Nikolaos.
18.00 Estimated arrival at Heraklion.

* Please note that all conference activities and social events may be subjected to change due to weather conditions or any other reason. For any changes you will be notified either through the conference webpage or through announcements during the conference.

** For all open air events you will need to wear appropriate clothing and shoes (weather depending).

*** Transfers to/from the conference venue will be offered in conjunction to the conference programme (that is before and after conference activities/events). Public transport and taxi service (at own cost) will be available for delegates wishing to arrive or depart to/from the conference venue at different times.
